Autopoiesis

The exhibition Autopoiesis explores the idea of self-organization in abstract painting. Originally introduced by Chilean biologist Humberto Maturana to describe living systems, the concept was later adopted by sociologist Niklas Luhmann in his theory of social systems.

In my painting, an image does not begin as the illustration of an idea. Rather, it develops through its own processes: one color responds to another, a line transforms a surface, and each decision creates new possibilities. The painting gradually develops its own internal structure.

For the first time, I consciously draw a connection between my work as a painter and the theoretical ideas of my father, Niklas Luhmann. Not by illustrating his theory, but by exploring similar questions through painting: How do forms emerge? How does a system organize itself through its own elements?

The paintings are not illustrations of a theory. They are experiments in self-generation.

Since 2022, a permanent exhibition of paintings by Clemens Luhmann has been on display across two floors of Haus Linde, a historic 18th-century building in Aachen-Laurensberg, Germany.

The paintings are presented throughout the building, including its staircases and historic interiors, creating a dialogue between contemporary abstract painting and Baroque architecture.
